Why do the Jews insist that the name of God cannot be uttered?

The name of god can be used in prayer. But using it in casual conversation is what is considered using it in vain, so there are, shall we say, aliases for god in Hebrew. The most common is Hashem. These names are used to refer to god without naming him.
