Why, if god is omniscient and all that?

did he not wait until the present dat to send jesus to save us?. Why send him to a bunch of mostly illiterate people in a time when the only realistic form of communication was word of mouth. Surely he would have known that we would progress to the point where we are today and then everyone could have got to know about jesus instead of a dozen or so hippies?
