How do I break a block of ice?

I am participating in a relay of sorts, and one of the events is called Frozen Shirt. For those unfamiliar with the game, participants must break a shirt out of a block of ice, and then wear it. They may not use outside objects, the may only throw it, smash it, thaw it, whatever. My question is, how do i win this event? The event is located on a rubber track (typically used for track & field events), but I can move to AstroTurf instead.
